he Spine, the latest short from Oscar-winning, Winnipeg-based animator Chris Landreth, has won the top prize at the Melbourne International Animation Festival.

The 10-minute film was named best in festival on Sunday in Melbourne, Australia.

The short, about a dysfunctional couple in counselling, has already won an award at the Annecy International Animation Festival, where it had its premiere.

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, Copperheart Animation and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, it features the voices of Gordon Pinsent and Alberta Watson.

Landreth has a distinctive computer animation style in which the emotions of his animated figures are reflected in the distortion of their appearance.

It’s the same technique he used in his biographical short Ryan, about NFB filmmaker Ryan Larkin, which also won prizes at Annecy and Melbourne before going on to win an Academy Award.

The Melbourne festival, one of the largest animation festivals in the world, screens 350-400 films each year.

On June 27, Mays had been aboard US Airways flight 1241 [1] which suffered a blowout of its front tires. The violence of the landing caused some loose objects in the cabin to strike some passengers. Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived. A cardiologist at UCLA tells TMZ Jackson died of cardiac arrest.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.
