Monday, March 10th, 2008 by goldfarbWe are On-Line Gamers Anonymous, a twelve-step, self-help organization and web site dedicated to helping those addicted to computer/video/console/on-line games. We also welcome the gamer’s friends and family, by offering our support and sympathy. Regardless of involvement or severity of addiction, these web pages and message board forums are always open to those in need.
Here are their 12 steps – with my comments
1. We admitted we were powerless over gaming, and that our lives have become unmanageable. Principles – Honesty and Acceptance
and we’re not that good at the games we play.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Principle – Hope
- we heard about a guy who is really good at Warcraft
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Principle – Faith
- Gary Gygax
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Principles – Action and Courage
- and had a quick look at my credic card bill.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Principle – Integrity
actually told my friends (IRL) that I play Warcraft.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Principle – Willingness
- just gave up and created a new character that didn’t have any stuff or cool powers.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Principle – Humility
see comment for #6
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Principle – Brotherly love
- apologized the that guy in the forums I argued with for 8 weeks about Paladin vs Mage.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure, them or others. Principle – Justice
- did the dishes.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Principle – Perseverance
- started a new notebook for my new character
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Principle – Spirituality
- bought a book called “WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal: Official Secrets and Solutions”
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we carried this message to others who game excessively and practiced these principles in all our affairs. Principle – Service
- started blog about new character
